In-game card: Bulk Bean Invoice

CHAOTIC CAFE

Balance the books, survive the chaos!

Chaotic Cafe is a double-entry accounting game about running your own café. Every card is a real bookkeeping transaction — assets, liabilities, equity, revenue, and expenses always have to balance. Learn it in three game modes: study with guided examples, race the clock in competitive mode, then hunt down errors in Accounting Fix.

Available directly on this site and on Steam.

What's in store

Double-Entry Transactions
Every card changes two accounts at once — the books only close if both sides balance.
A Real Chart of Accounts
Cash, loans, share capital, debtors, depreciation — built on accounts a real bookkeeper uses.
Funny, Quirky Cards
700 kilos of bananas, a life-size pink elephant, a new hire nobody remembers — every absurd café moment is a real transaction.
Stories With Consequences
A bad review, a new competitor, an economic crisis — your choices carry over from card to card.

Three game modes, one learning path

Everything in Chaotic Cafe follows the accounting equation: assets + expenses = liabilities + equity + revenue. Every card is a transaction that has to balance. The three modes use the same cards, but each one asks more of you.

Step 1 · Learn by watching

Study Mode

You run the café and draw event cards: buying beans, paying rent, taking a loan. The game books each card for you and shows exactly how, so you see the accounting equation in action.

  • ✓The BingBong table highlights which accounts change, and arrows show where the money moves.
  • ✓A ledger records every transaction with its story, and an equity chart tracks how your choices change your equity.
  • ✓Hint bubbles and an interactive tutorial guide the first cards. Play solo or take turns with 2–4 players.

Step 2 · Learn by doing

Competitive Mode

Now the booking is hidden. A card appears and you click the two account groups it affects, with the right plus or minus side, before the timer runs out.

  • ✓A correct answer scores 10 to 100 points: the faster you answer, the more you get. A wrong answer scores nothing.
  • ✓Rounds are short (15 seconds by default) and you choose how many to play. The leaderboard shows who booked fastest.
  • ✓Play solo or against 2–4 players. A round ends early once everyone has answered.

Step 3 · Learn by auditing

Accounting Fix

The roles reverse. The ledger is already booked, but some entries were booked wrongly on purpose. Your job is to find every mistake before you close the books.

  • ✓Open the history, click “Fix” on a row that looks wrong and pick the right account group and plus or minus side. Not sure? Flag the row as suspicious instead.
  • ✓You choose how many errors are hidden (three by default) and how many extra random cards are mixed in.
  • ✓Submit to the tax authority to get your audit results: what you found, fixed correctly, fixed incorrectly or missed, with the correct booking next to yours. In multiplayer everyone audits their own set at their own pace.

Scaffolding: how you learn accounting here

Chaotic Cafe uses scaffolding, a teaching method where support is strongest at the start and is removed step by step as your skill grows. Instead of throwing you into debits and credits, the game hands the work over to you gradually.

  1. 1

Study Mode: the game does the booking

You see worked examples. Every account change is shown and explained, so you build the pattern in your head without pressure.

  2. 2

Competitive Mode: you do the booking

The support is gone. You recall the pattern yourself, and the timer turns it into a fast, automatic habit.

  3. 3

Accounting Fix: you check the booking

You spot errors in a finished ledger. That takes real understanding, because you must know what correct looks like. It is the last step before real bookkeeping.

Watch, do, then check: this is how people usually learn a new skill, and it is the path the three modes follow.

The world of Chaotic Cafe

Every card is a transaction — see how the books add up.

In Chaotic Cafe, you take the helm of a bustling coffee shop where every day brings unexpected surprises — from rush-hour coffee orders and broken espresso machines to surprise health inspections and quirky regulars.

The catch? There are no spreadsheets here. Every choice is played through interactive transaction cards. When you buy premium beans, take out a toaster loan, or record daily cash revenue, both sides of the double-entry ledger have to balance. Start with guided examples, book on your own against the clock, then audit a ledger full of mistakes!
